Who We Are
Mort’s Rentals is the brainchild of Todd Mortensen and his son, David. Todd has been a Scoutmaster and church youth leader for over 30 years. During that time, it became apparent there is a real need for affordable activities and equipment for youth activities. Not every parent could afford a warm, lightweight sleeping bag for high-elevation backpacking trips and finding a game that a large group could do together was a challenge.
The Mortensen’s spent lots of time outdoors with their six children camping, rockclimbing, snowshoeing and playing at the lake. As a result, the Mortensen family collected a large assortment of equipment and camping gear that was frequently borrowed by neighbors and other youth leaders. One day, David said “Dad, you ought to rent this stuff. It seems like everyone needs it.” So, Mort’s Rentals was born.
For the first two years, Mort’s was run out of the Mortensen’s home in Cedar Hills, UT. Todd, Rebecca and their kids took calls and filled orders whenever they were home. There was a real demand for water gear so they acquired a fairly large collection of inflatable kayaks and paddle boards, among other things. After filling the garage, a room underneath the garage, a couple of trailers, and their daughter’s garage and storage shed with equipment, the Mortensen’s eventually realized they needed a dedicated space. The old pseudo-Sinclair gas station on the corner of 1100 East and 50th South in American Fork had been empty for some months. Todd made a few phone calls and a couple of months later, the family became the owners of the building and Mort’s Rentals had a new home.
Today, Mort’s Rentals & Sales is a retail and rental business. The majority of the business is seasonal rentals; paddle boards of all sizes, kayaks, various other types of water equipment in the summertime; snowshoes and sleds in the wintertime with games and other kinds of gear rounding out the rest of the year.
Our philosophy is that doing things together, brings people closer. Our gear can make that happen.
Mort's Rentals is named after Todd's beloved father, nicknamed Mort. Mort was deeply cherished by his family and was known for instilling values of hard work, honesty, and integrity in his children. A proud patriot, Mort served in the Navy during World War II and took part in the invasion of Okinawa, demonstrating his bravery and dedication to his country. One of Mort's favorite quotes, "Listen more than you speak," reflects his wisdom and emphasis on the importance of attentive communication. Through Mort's Rentals, Todd honors his father's memory and values by providing exceptional service and quality equipment to customers while embodying the principles of integrity and respect that Mort exemplified throughout his life.
